240 Colors That Start With O: Full Names and HEX Codes

Looking for colors that start with O? This atlas gathers 240 choices, from familiar Orange and Olive to unusual names such as Opal Flame and Ozone Blue. Use the swatches and matching HEX and RGB values to find a color quickly, then check its type before putting the name into code.

Colors That Start With O: The Quick Answer

There are hundreds of documented English color names beginning with O. This curated list contains 240 distinct names selected from a pool of 726 O-initial catalog rows, including warm oranges, oceanic blues, botanical greens, pale neutrals, deep near-blacks, and purples.

HEX is the controlling digital value in every row. Each RGB triplet and visible Color cell agrees with that six-digit code. The Type column separates the six standardized CSS colors from descriptive names in a broad color-name catalog. A catalog name is useful for inspiration and communication, but it does not automatically have an official meaning in browsers, paint systems, printing, or manufacturing.

Colors That Start With O

The larger catalog contains 31,918 names assembled from established lists and community contributions. Its range makes it useful for browsing, but careful labeling remains important: entries outside the six CSS colors are non-CSS names retained from the curated catalog or the identified survey source.

The O Color Atlas

The four tables form one continuous alphabetical list. Spaces, punctuation, capitalization, and accents are ignored for ordering, so names such as O’Brien Orange appear where their letters place them. The swatches are digital references, not measured samples of paint, ink, fabric, stone, or another physical material.

Which O Color Names Are Standardized?

The Six CSS Named Colors That Start With O

CSS defines exactly six named-color keywords beginning with O: Old Lace #FDF5E6, Olive #808000, Olive Drab #6B8E23, Orange #FFA500, Orange Red #FF4500, and Orchid #DA70D6. Their exact code tokens are oldlace, olive, olivedrab, orange, orangered, and orchid.

colors that start with o — Material studyAI-generated editorial illustration; not a measured color sample.

Notice that multiword CSS tokens omit spaces. A design label such as “Old Lace” is easy to read, but a browser expects oldlace. If there is any doubt about name support, use the six-digit HEX value instead.

Historical, Survey-Based, and Creative Names

Other naming systems answer different questions. Historical dictionaries document how color terms were used in particular records; one notable US reference is the 1976 NBS color-language and color-name dictionary. That historical documentation does not turn every recorded term into a current browser keyword.

Survey-based names describe how participants labeled colors shown on monitors. One widely used survey list contains 954 common RGB color names gathered from several hundred thousand participants, but it is a record of naming behavior rather than a technical standard. Curated catalogs go wider still, combining established lists with imaginative design names. For more background on these systems, see this guide to unique color names and HEX codes.

How Conflicting Color Names Are Resolved

A familiar name can point to different values in different systems. CSS defines Orchid as #DA70D6, while the broader catalog associates the unqualified name with #7A81FF. CSS therefore controls the Orchid row here. Likewise, CSS Orange is #FFA500, while a survey-based list associates “orange” with #F97306.

This atlas gives a standardized CSS value priority whenever an unqualified name matches a CSS keyword. For other entries, it retains one catalog value per displayed name. That rule avoids presenting two competing codes as though both were one exact color.

How to Use the HEX Values Reliably

Copy HEX for Digital Design

A six-digit HEX code describes red, green, and blue channel values for digital use. For example, #800020 converts to RGB 128, 0, 32, which is the value shown for Oxblood. Copying the HEX code is more reliable than relying on a descriptive name because software can interpret the number directly.

Even then, two screens may not look identical because displays and viewing conditions vary. HEX fixes the requested digital values; it does not guarantee identical physical light output on every device. The color wheel tutorial can help when you need to place one of these references in a broader harmony.

Do Not Treat a Screen Swatch as a Paint Recipe

A digital RGB or HEX reference is not a paint recipe or a universal physical-color specification. Use these values as visual targets when planning a project, then compare real samples under the intended lighting.

If you want to mix a physical orange, follow a medium-specific guide such as how to mix different shades of orange and the paint manufacturer’s instructions.

Check Contrast Before Using an O Color for Text

Readability depends on the foreground and background together, not on the color name. WCAG 2.2 sets a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text. Large text means at least 18 point regular or 14 point bold. Test the exact pair rather than assuming a dark-sounding name such as Onyx or Oxford Blue will pass against every background.

Do not use color alone to communicate an error, status, selection, or required field. Add text, an icon, a pattern, or another visible cue. Strong contrast also helps people with low contrast sensitivity and many forms of color-vision deficiency.

Choosing an O Color by Project Need

Warm Accents

Start with the Orange, Ochre, Oak, and warm Opal groups when you need an accent that leans red, yellow, or brown. Orange Red and Ōtan Red make assertive digital highlights, while Oak Buff, Oat Straw, Old Gold, and Oyster offer quieter options. These are practical visual groupings, not claims that every viewer will attach the same emotion to a hue.

Cool Blues, Greens, and Purples

Oasis, Ocean Blue, Opal, Oregon Blue, Oxford Blue, and Ozone Blue provide cool browsing points. Orchid, Opera Blue, Ontario Violet, and Oily Purple cover several purple directions. “Cool” remains relative to neighboring colors, so compare candidates in the actual layout rather than selecting from the name alone.

Light and Dark Neutrals

For pale backgrounds, compare Oat Flour, Off White, Old Lace, Onion Skin, Open Book, Ostrich, Oyster, and Overnight Oats. For dark foundations, inspect Oblivion, Obsidian Shard, Oil Slick, Onyx, Outer Space, Oxblood, and Oxford Blue. Near-whites and near-blacks can carry subtle hue biases that become obvious beside a true white or black.

When predictable browser syntax matters, begin with one of the six CSS names. For every other atlas entry, use its HEX value as the exact digital reference, test it in context, and verify contrast before treating the choice as final.
