219 Colors That Start With L: A Curated HEX Atlas

Looking for colors that start with L? This atlas gives you 219 color names with copy-ready six-digit HEX references, matching RGB values, and visible swatches. It also marks the small group of browser-standard CSS names, so you can distinguish a recognized keyword from a creative label before using it.

What counts as a color that starts with L?

This collection includes a color when its displayed English name begins with L after spaces, punctuation, accents, and capitalization are ignored for sorting. Every row has one controlling six-digit HEX value, and the RGB numbers and swatch are derived from that same value. These are sRGB screen references, not measurements of paint, ink, fabric, or pigment.

Standardized names versus creative catalog names

The Type column separates two different kinds of names. A CSS keyword is defined in the W3C CSS color specification and resolves to a standard sRGB value in a browser. A catalog label is a human-curated descriptive name paired with a reproducible digital HEX reference, but it is not automatically recognized by browsers or accepted as an official color standard.

Colors That Start With L

CSS has 22 keyword tokens beginning with L. Two are British-spelling aliases, lightgrey and lightslategrey, that repeat the values of their gray counterparts. This US English atlas therefore includes 20 distinct CSS entries and labels the other 199 rows as catalog names.

How the 219 colors were selected

The creative pool was narrowed from more than 1,500 L-name candidates in a maintained, human-curated color catalog. Clear names, useful hue variety, familiar terms, and prefix diversity received priority. Duplicate names, conflicting unqualified values, duplicate CSS gray aliases, clearly brand-associated labels, and weak clusters of novelty names were excluded. When a catalog word also exists as a CSS keyword, the standardized CSS value controls the atlas row.

The result is 219 verified entries rather than a padded round number. The tables remain alphabetical across section breaks, making the list quick to scan without implying that every descriptive label has the same authority as Lavender, Lime, or another standardized keyword.

Colors that start with L: La to Le

The first part of the atlas moves from Labrador and La phrases through lavender, lawn, leaf, lemon, and the final Le names.

How to read the names, HEX codes, and labels

Which L names are CSS keywords?

The 20 rows marked CSS keyword can be used directly as named colors in CSS. Their identifiers are ASCII case-insensitive, but spaces are not part of the token. The display label “Light Sea Green,” for example, becomes lightseagreen. You can also use its equivalent HEX value, #20B2AA.

Standardized does not mean perfectly named. The CSS named-color set grew over time and is neither evenly distributed nor fully consistent, so a keyword’s technical status is more reliable than the mental image its name creates.

Why one color name can have different HEX codes

Ordinary color words are labels, not universal numeric laws. CSS defines Lavender as #E6E6FA, while a large monitor-color survey recorded Lavender as #C79FEF. CSS Lime is #00FF00, while the same survey associated Lime with #AAFF32. Neither comparison means that a screen value is the one true physical form of lavender flowers or lime peel. It shows why a project should record both the chosen name and its exact HEX code.

Using L colors in web, craft, and print projects

Use the HEX value in digital projects

For a catalog label, copy the HEX value rather than typing the name into CSS. A browser will understand color: #26619C; for Lapis Lazuli, but color: lapis lazuli; is not a valid named-color declaration. For standardized entries, either the keyword or its HEX equivalent works.

Keep the HEX code in a project’s style guide even when you also use the friendly name. That prevents collaborators, design apps, or later revisions from choosing a different value for a familiar word such as Lilac or Lemon.

Check text contrast

Readability depends on a foreground and background pair, not on whether a color sounds light or dark. Under WCAG 2.2 Level AA, normal text needs a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1. Large text needs at least 3:1, where large means at least 18 pt for regular text or 14 pt for bold text. Do not round a result upward to pass a threshold.

Check the final pair with a contrast calculator, including hover, focus, disabled, and visited states when they carry essential text. A swatch that looks distinct in a palette can still fail when used for small lettering.

Test printed and physical output

HEX and RGB describe sRGB screen color. Printers and presses reproduce color with ink, and their gamuts can differ from a monitor’s. Paper, color profiles, device behavior, and viewing conditions can also change the result.

For a print job, use the intended color profile and request a proof when color accuracy matters. For a physical craft, use the atlas only to choose a digital reference. It does not supply a paint, ink, dye, thread, or vinyl formula or guarantee a material match.
