34 Colors That Start With Z: Names, HEX, and RGB

Colors that start with Z range from the intense blue of Zaffre to the pale gray of Zumthor. This atlas gives you 34 evidence-backed names with copyable HEX and RGB values, matching digital swatches, and clear labels showing what kind of color name each one is. You will also learn which text color offers stronger contrast and why none of these names works as a standard CSS color keyword.

Colors That Start With Z: 34 Verified Names

These 34 entries met the inclusion standard: each name begins with Z and has a traceable six-digit HEX association. The list combines 25 Resene manufacturer colors, seven names documented in a general color reference, and two names from an independent private registry. It is a curated reference, not a claim that only 34 Z color names exist.

HEX controls every RGB triplet and swatch below. The final column compares only black and white text and identifies the one with the higher contrast against that exact background.

What Kind of Color Name Is Each One?

A color name has authority only within the system that defines it. A browser keyword, a paint manufacturer’s catalog name, a historical material term, and a privately registered digital name are not interchangeable categories.

No CSS Named Color Starts With Z

CSS Color Level 4 defines a fixed table of named-color keywords. Its final alphabetical entries are yellow and yellowgreen, so there is no standard keyword beginning with Z. A browser will not recognize zomp, zaffre, or any other display name in this atlas as a named color.

This does not make the names false. It means you must supply a valid color notation, such as the six-digit HEX value, when writing CSS.

Historical Terms, Vendor Names, and Registry Names

Most entries here come from the Resene catalog. They are manufacturer color names with electronic representations, not universal definitions that every paint company or color system must follow. A manufacturer swatch also does not turn a six-digit screen value into a guaranteed physical paint match.

Zaffre has a documented material history as well as a modern digital association. Other entries appear in a general color reference, while Zinnwaldite and Zombie Green are digital names from an independent private registry. That registry is not a governmental or international standards organization, so its entries should be read as attributed registrations rather than official global standards.

Why Zuccini and Zucchini Are Not Separate Entries

Zuccini is the spelling used for the manufacturer entry paired with #17462E. Treating the familiar spelling Zucchini as a second row would create a duplicate without adding a distinct, supported color. This atlas therefore preserves the catalog spelling and lists it once.

How to Use the HEX Values

The HEX code is the controlling digital reference in this atlas. Each pair of hexadecimal digits gives the red, green, and blue channels in sRGB, the color space used for these web references. For example, #39A78D converts to RGB 57, 167, 141.

Using Z Colors in CSS and Design Apps

Copy the six-digit value into a color field, or use it directly in CSS. Because the display names are not standard CSS keywords, a custom property is a useful way to keep a readable project label:

:root {
  --zomp-resene: #39A78D;
}

.sample {
  background-color: var(--zomp-resene);
  color: #000000;
}

Keep the qualification in your project notes when a value belongs to a specific catalog. This matters for Zomp: the Resene-associated value used here is #39A78D, while a common general reference publishes the neighboring value #39A78E. A one-channel difference is small, but the label prevents two references from being mistaken for one universal definition.

Screen Color Is Not a Paint Formula

A CSS HEX value describes emitted screen color in sRGB. Paint is a physical material whose appearance depends on reflected light, illumination, and the sample itself. The value shown for Zinc White (Resene), for example, is an electronic catalog reference, not a recipe for mixing zinc-white artist paint.

Printed output can also differ because devices do not all reproduce the same gamut, or range of colors. Use the HEX code for digital consistency within an sRGB workflow, but inspect a real manufacturer sample under the intended lighting before choosing architectural paint. For artist materials, work from the pigment and medium information on the product rather than trying to mix from a screen swatch.

Choose Readable Text for Z Colors

Readable text depends on the exact foreground and background pair, not on whether a name sounds light or dark. The recommendation in each atlas row selects whichever of pure black or pure white produces the higher contrast against that row’s HEX value.

Check the Exact Foreground and Background Pair

For normal text, WCAG guidance sets a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1. Large text needs at least 3:1 when it is 18 pt or larger in regular weight, or 14 pt or larger in bold. Do not round a result upward to make a failing pair appear to pass.

The table’s choice is a useful starting point, not approval for every interface. Recalculate contrast if you use tinted text, transparency, a gradient, a photograph, or a modified background. Border colors, hover states, and disabled controls also need to be evaluated in their actual context.

Do Not Rely on the Swatch Alone

Keep a color’s name, HEX code, or another readable label beside its swatch. Color alone should not communicate important information. A form error, chart category, or status indicator needs a text label, symbol, pattern, or other cue that remains understandable when hues are difficult to distinguish.

This principle also makes a palette easier to maintain. Someone can identify #254683 as Zoop De Loop from the adjacent text even if their display renders it differently or they cannot perceive its hue clearly.

Three Z Names With Material Context

Some Z names point beyond digital design, but a historical material or artist pigment cannot be reduced to a single screen sample. These examples show where that distinction matters.

Zaffre

Historical zaffre was treated roasted cobalt ore mixed with varying amounts of quartz or sand. It supplied cobalt for blue glass and for smalt, a blue glass-based artist material. The atlas value #0014A8 is a modern digital association, not a measurement that represents every historical batch of zaffre.

Zinc White

Zinc White is also the name of a real zinc-oxide artist pigment. In the atlas, however, Zinc White (Resene) refers specifically to the manufacturer’s electronic color #E1DBD0. The shared wording does not make that HEX value the universal digital identity of zinc-white pigment.

In oil paint, zinc white can participate in the formation of zinc soaps. Some resulting structures can contribute to brittle, splitting, or flaking paint films, although not every occurrence causes visible damage. That is a medium- and condition-specific conservation issue, not a hazard or weakness in the HEX code. Readers comparing physical media can consult this guide to oil painting for beginners for broader material context.

Zinnwaldite and Zinnwaldite Brown

Zinnwaldite #EBC2AF and Zinnwaldite Brown #2C1608 are separate digital color-name associations with dramatically different values. Their inclusion does not imply that every physical mineral specimen linked to the term has either exact screen appearance. Use the codes as named digital references, not measured material samples.
