240 Colors That Start With W: HEX, RGB, and Swatches

Colors that start with W range from airy whites and water blues to deep wine, wood, and winter greens. This curated atlas gives you 240 distinct names with exact six-digit HEX references, matching RGB values, visible swatches, and a clear label for each name’s status. Use it to find a color quickly, then apply the practical notes to choose a readable and reproducible combination.

What Counts as a Color That Starts With W?

A W color in this atlas is an English display name that begins with the letter W and has a documented six-digit HEX association. The collection contains 240 entries selected from a much larger catalog pool, then checked for duplicate display names, suitability, complete codes, and normalized alphabetical order. HEX is the controlling digital value here: each RGB triplet and swatch is derived from it.

Standardized, Manufacturer, and Catalog Names

The status column prevents a creative label from looking more official than it is. Standardized CSS keyword means browsers recognize the corresponding named-color token. Manufacturer name; catalog HEX means a manufacturer documents the name, while the displayed numeric value is the chosen catalog association. Non-standard catalog name identifies a useful design label, not a universal standard, paint formula, or measured material sample.

Colors That Start With W

Only Wheat, White, and White Smoke belong to the standardized CSS W group. Crayola documents Wild Blue Yonder, Wild Strawberry, and Wisteria in its range, but those names are not CSS keywords. The remaining creative names are retained as catalog references and should be used with their explicit HEX codes.

Why One Name Can Have More Than One HEX Value

Color names do not form one universal registry. Separate catalogs can assign different values to the same label, as happens with Wisteria, Wild Strawberry, and Wild Watermelon. Averaging those codes would create a new, unsupported color, so this atlas uses a standards-first rule: a CSS definition controls standardized names; a manufacturer controls membership in its own range; otherwise, one catalog association supplies the displayed value.

This distinction matters most with familiar descriptive words. Walnut, Watermelon, Wine, and Wood Brown suggest broad color families, but their exact appearance changes with the source. Copy the HEX value when precision matters instead of relying on the name alone.

Colors That Start With W: The 240-Color Atlas

The tables form one continuous alphabetical sequence. Spaces, punctuation, case, and accents are ignored for ordering, while the displayed spelling remains intact. Every Color cell uses the same HEX value shown in its row.

The Three CSS W Color Keywords

CSS defines three opaque named-color keywords beginning with W. Wheat is #F5DEB3 with the token wheat, White is #FFFFFF with the token white, and White Smoke is #F5F5F5 with the token whitesmoke. Their values are fixed sRGB references; the broader catalog names above do not become browser keywords simply because they have HEX values.

colors that start with w — Material studyAI-generated editorial illustration; not a measured color sample.

Wheat, White, and White Smoke

This standards-first treatment is important because a creative catalog can attach a different value to a familiar display name. For CSS work, the standardized value wins.

Display Names Versus Exact CSS Tokens

Human-readable labels can include spaces and capitalization. CSS syntax is different: use wheat, white, or whitesmoke. The White Smoke token has no space, and CSS named-color keywords are case-insensitive. Any other atlas entry should be entered by its explicit HEX value unless the software you are using defines its own named palette.

How to Use W Colors in a Design

Choose a Dominant, Supporting, or Accent Color

Start with function, not a supposed personality attached to a name. A dominant color covers the largest area, a supporting color organizes secondary surfaces, and an accent draws attention to a small detail. For example, White Smoke can serve as a quiet surface, Wenge can ground headings or furniture-inspired elements, and Watermelon can mark a button or focal detail. Those roles are design suggestions, not universal meanings.

Compare actual swatches before committing. Warm Light, Whisper, and White Chocolate all read as pale colors, yet their yellow, pink, and cream biases produce different relationships with nearby colors. Likewise, Wine, Winter Sea, and Wood Charcoal are all dark, but their red, blue, and neutral leanings make them behave differently in a palette.

Check Text Contrast Before Publishing

A pleasing pair is not automatically readable. Test the exact foreground and background together. A widely used accessibility target is a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for ordinary text. The large-text thresholds are 18pt regular or 14pt bold, approximately 24px and 18.5px. Size, weight, and the adjacent background all matter, so do not judge contrast from an isolated swatch.

Very light entries such as White, White Smoke, or Walkie Chalkie usually need dark text. Dark entries such as Warm Black, Wine, or Winter Sea may support light text, but each pair still requires measurement. Borders, hover states, disabled controls, and text placed over photographs need their own checks.

What HEX Codes Can and Cannot Tell You

Screen Color Versus Printed Color

A six-digit HEX code provides a repeatable sRGB-oriented digital reference. It does not guarantee that every display will look identical because calibration, brightness, color profile, and device gamut can differ. RGB describes emitted red, green, and blue light, while CMYK describes subtractive process inks on paper. That is why this atlas does not list a profile-free CMYK conversion as an exact equivalent.

For print, convert within the intended color-managed workflow and proof on the real output conditions when color matters. Printer profile, ink set, paper color and finish, and viewing light can all shift the result. Some bright screen colors may also fall outside the printer’s reproducible gamut.

Paint and Material Samples Are Separate References

A HEX value is a digital reference, not a physical product specification. A screen swatch named Walnut or Wenge therefore does not identify a particular wood stain, wall paint, fabric dye, or artist pigment.

Use the atlas to establish a digital direction, then compare an appropriate manufacturer sample or a test swatch in the actual material before making a color-critical choice. Record the product and color identifier when the physical result must be repeated.
